About the Course:

Shoulder Range of Motion Techniques is an essential patient care skill for Nursing Assistants supporting mobility, flexibility, and comfort in healthcare settings. This microcredential introduces learners to safe shoulder range of motion (ROM) exercises designed to help maintain joint mobility, prevent stiffness, and support patient well-being.

Through immersive VR simulations, learners practice preparing the patient and environment, maintaining privacy, performing hand hygiene, identifying the patient, explaining the procedure, and safely assisting with shoulder ROM exercises. The course emphasizes patient communication, comfort, proper positioning, safe body mechanics, and recognizing discomfort during each movement.

Learners will practice assisting with shoulder flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, internal rotation, external rotation, and hyperextension while following appropriate sequencing and patient safety practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the purpose and benefits of shoulder range of motion exercises.
  • Understand proper patient preparation, positioning, privacy, and safety procedures.
  • Demonstrate safe techniques for performing shoulder flexion and extension.
  • Perform shoulder abduction and adduction using proper movement techniques.
  • Apply appropriate hand hygiene, communication, and patient identification practices.
  • Recognize pain or discomfort and respond according to appropriate care procedures.

Course delivered through our LMS and accessible in both VR and web. Learn on the web anytime, or enjoy immersive VR training with your own Oculus VR headset.

Foot hygiene and comfort care for nursing assistant training

At ImmerseLearn, we prepare Nursing Assistants with essential mobility and patient care skills required in healthcare environments. This microcredential develops competency in shoulder ROM techniques, patient positioning, communication, privacy, safety, comfort, and professional caregiving practices through immersive VR practice.

Understanding Shoulder Range of Motion
Explore interactive 3D visuals demonstrating shoulder movements and their importance in maintaining flexibility, joint mobility, and functional movement. Learners understand the purpose of ROM exercises and the role of Nursing Assistants in supporting safe patient mobility.
Patient Preparation and Safety +
Practice maintaining patient privacy, performing hand hygiene, introducing yourself, verifying patient identity, explaining the procedure, and positioning the patient safely in a supine position. Learners also practice communicating expectations and recognizing when exercises should be paused due to discomfort.
Shoulder Flexion, Extension, Abduction, and Adduction +
Engage in immersive VR scenarios to practice safely moving the patient's arm through flexion and extension, followed by abduction and adduction. Learners develop proper hand placement, controlled movement, communication, and patient comfort throughout each exercise.
Internal and External Rotation +
Practice positioning the patient's elbow and safely moving the forearm and hand through internal and external rotation. Learners focus on controlled movements, correct positioning, proper sequencing, and monitoring the patient for discomfort.
Shoulder Hyperextension and Procedure Completion +
Practice assisting the patient into a seated position and performing shoulder hyperextension by safely moving the arm behind the body. Learners reinforce proper communication, positioning, controlled movement, patient comfort, and professional completion of the procedure.

By completing this microcredential, learners will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in performing shoulder range of motion exercises safely and effectively. Learners will develop essential competencies in patient preparation, privacy, communication, positioning, shoulder ROM techniques, safety, comfort, and professional patient care practices required in Nursing Assistant settings.
