USP Sterile Compounding Simulation
About the Course:
The USP Sterile Compounding Simulation microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely perform sterile compounding procedures in accordance with USP standards and aseptic technique principles.
Learners will practice proper preparation of a sterile work environment, disinfection procedures, syringe handling, medication transfer, IV admixture preparation, and final product verification while maintaining sterility throughout the compounding process.
Through immersive VR simulations, students will engage in step-by-step sterile compounding activities including cleaning an IV bag injection port, preparing sterile supplies, aseptically injecting medication into an IV saline bag, recapping and disposing of materials appropriately, and mixing the final preparation to ensure uniform medication distribution. The simulation reinforces patient safety, contamination prevention, and procedural compliance at every stage.
Learning Objectives:
- Explain the purpose and importance of sterile compounding in patient care.
- Demonstrate proper aseptic techniques when preparing sterile medications.
- Apply USP guidelines for maintaining a clean and organized compounding environment.
- Perform correct disinfection of IV bag injection ports using alcohol swabs.
- Demonstrate safe syringe and needle handling procedures during medication transfer.
- Aseptically inject medication into an IV bag while maintaining sterility.
- Perform proper mixing techniques to ensure uniform medication distribution.
Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.
