About the Course:

The USP Sterile Compounding Simulation microcredential equips pharmacy technician students with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to safely perform sterile compounding procedures in accordance with USP standards and aseptic technique principles.

Learners will practice proper preparation of a sterile work environment, disinfection procedures, syringe handling, medication transfer, IV admixture preparation, and final product verification while maintaining sterility throughout the compounding process.

Through immersive VR simulations, students will engage in step-by-step sterile compounding activities including cleaning an IV bag injection port, preparing sterile supplies, aseptically injecting medication into an IV saline bag, recapping and disposing of materials appropriately, and mixing the final preparation to ensure uniform medication distribution. The simulation reinforces patient safety, contamination prevention, and procedural compliance at every stage.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the purpose and importance of sterile compounding in patient care.
  • Demonstrate proper aseptic techniques when preparing sterile medications.
  • Apply USP guidelines for maintaining a clean and organized compounding environment.
  • Perform correct disinfection of IV bag injection ports using alcohol swabs.
  • Demonstrate safe syringe and needle handling procedures during medication transfer.
  • Aseptically inject medication into an IV bag while maintaining sterility.
  • Perform proper mixing techniques to ensure uniform medication distribution.

Course delivered via LMS and requires an Oculus VR headset for hands-on VR simulations.

At ImmerseLearn, we empower pharmacy technician students to develop precision, aseptic technique proficiency, and confidence in sterile compounding procedures. This microcredential strengthens attention to detail, contamination control practices, procedural accuracy, and adherence to USP standards critical skills required in hospital, infusion, and sterile pharmacy environments.

Sterile Workspace Preparation
Practice organizing supplies within a Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) and maintaining a clean sterile environment before beginning compounding activities. Learn proper workflow setup, surface cleanliness requirements, and contamination prevention strategies that support safe medication preparation.
Aseptic Disinfection Procedures +
Develop proficiency in preparing alcohol swabs and properly disinfecting IV bag injection ports prior to medication transfer. Practice correct hand positioning, stabilization techniques, and required contact times to ensure effective microbial reduction and compliance with sterile compounding standards.
Syringe Handling & Medication Transfer +
Master safe syringe and needle handling techniques including cap removal, needle positioning, medication injection, and recapping procedures. Reinforce aseptic manipulation skills while maintaining sterility and minimizing contamination risks during medication transfer into IV solutions.
IV Admixture Preparation & Mixing +
Perform aseptic medication injection into an IV saline bag using proper technique and controlled movements. Practice mixing the compounded IV preparation through repeated bag inversion to ensure even medication distribution and product consistency.
Product Verification & Final Inspection +
Transfer the completed IV admixture for final verification and inspection. Review medication distribution, solution appearance, container integrity, and preparation accuracy while confirming readiness for safe patient administration.
Quality Assurance & USP Compliance +
Understand the importance of contamination prevention, aseptic workflow management, documentation practices, and adherence to USP sterile compounding standards. Participate in performance evaluations within the VR simulation to reinforce compliance, patient safety, and procedural accuracy.

By completing this microcredential, pharmacy technician students will gain the technical skills and procedural confidence required to safely prepare sterile compounded medications, ensuring product integrity, contamination control, patient safety, and compliance with professional pharmacy standards.
